Hard Water in Clearwater: Why Shower Glass Goes Cloudy

Pinellas water runs 9 to 12 grains hard, leaving roughly a tablespoon of mineral on a shower door each year. Here is the test for whether it comes off.

Two different problems look identical on a shower door and only one of them comes off. Run water down the glass. If the haze vanishes while the panel is wet and returns as it dries, that is mineral sitting on top of the surface and it will come off with the right chemistry. If the panel still looks milky with water running over it, the glass itself has corroded, and nothing in a spray bottle brings that back.

Most of what we take off doors here is the first kind. It builds because of what comes out of the tap.

Where Clearwater's water comes from, and why your glass cares

Around 80 percent of the roughly 11 million gallons the city delivers daily is pumped from Clearwater's own wells in the Floridan Aquifer. It runs through three treatment plants, two of them reverse osmosis. One takes upper-aquifer water, strips iron and suspended solids, then pushes it through membranes that pull out the hardness salts. The other works brackish water from deeper down and uses ozone to knock out sulfide first. Both finish with monochloramine. The rest of the city's demand is purchased from Pinellas County Utilities, which draws on the Tampa Bay Water regional blend: Alafia and Hillsborough river water, Floridan groundwater, and desalinated seawater from the bay.

Two things follow from that. Reverse osmosis does pull hardness out, but finished water is deliberately stabilized before it leaves the plant so it does not eat the distribution mains, so nobody is receiving distilled water at the faucet. Depending on where your street sits in the system, your house may be drinking mostly county supply anyway, and reported hardness around Pinellas commonly lands between 150 and 200 mg/L. Call it 9 to 12 grains per gallon. The second thing is chloramine, which is not free chlorine: it does not gas off if you leave a bucket standing overnight, and it must never meet an acid cleaner.

At 10 grains, every liter of water that dries on the panel leaves about 170 milligrams of dissolved solids behind. A shower leaves a few ounces clinging to the glass. Two adults showering daily works out to something on the order of a tablespoon of rock cemented onto that door across a year, laid down thin enough that you never notice the day it changed.

Acid removes it. Scrubbing does not.

Scale is a carbonate. It dissolves in acid and it does not care how hard you push. Citric, phosphoric and sulfamic all work, and the variable that decides the outcome is dwell time on a vertical pane, which is exactly what a thin liquid cannot give you. Use a gel, or lay paper towels against the glass and soak them so the product stays put for ten or fifteen minutes. Then a nylon pad, then rinse properly.

The caveats are where people wreck things:

  • Never let acid touch marble, travertine or limestone. A lot of the condo stock on Sand Key and Island Estates has travertine curbs, marble thresholds and stone shelves inside the shower. Those are calcium carbonate too. The acid cannot tell the stone from the scale, and it dulls the surface in seconds. That is a stone restoration bill, not a cleaning one.
  • Never mix an acid with bleach or anything chlorinated. That reaction makes chlorine gas, in a small tiled room, with the door shut.
  • Keep it off the frame and hardware. Anodized aluminum, brushed nickel and oil-rubbed bronze do not survive long acid contact. Wipe drips as they happen rather than after.

The film acid alone will not touch

Soap scum is different chemistry from scale. Real bar soap contains fatty acids, and those react with calcium in the water to form calcium stearate, which is essentially a soft wax. A descaler attacks the mineral half and leaves the greasy half sitting there, which is why acid sometimes seems to half-work and then stall. Degrease with an alkaline cleaner, rinse, then descale.

The easier fix is upstream. Bar soap makes scum; synthetic detergent body washes largely do not. Houses that switch stop needing the heavy treatment within a couple of months. It is a small change and it beats anything we could sell you.

Twelve dollars beats every spray bottle

One squeegee pass after the last shower of the day removes most of the water before it can evaporate, and water that never evaporates leaves nothing behind. It takes fifteen seconds. Run the exhaust fan for twenty minutes afterward rather than two, since the humidity has to go somewhere and the panel is the coldest flat surface in the room.

Aerators, showerheads and cloudy glassware

Faucet aerators unscrew. Drop yours in a cup of vinegar overnight and the flow comes back. Most weak kitchen faucets in older houses are a plugged screen rather than a pressure problem. Showerheads take the same treatment in a bag rubber-banded around the arm.

Cloudy glassware out of the dishwasher splits the same way the door does. Run a cycle with citric acid and no detergent: if the glasses clear, it was film. If they do not, they are etched, and dishwasher etching is usually caused by the opposite of hard water, meaning very soft water plus too much detergent plus a high-heat dry. Cut the detergent dose before you buy anything.

Is a softener worth it here

On a private well in the north end of the county, yes, and it is not a close call. On city supply the case is weaker than a salesperson will tell you, because you are already starting from membrane-treated water blended with county water, and a softener trades calcium for sodium, which some households care about. If you do install one, leave the kitchen cold tap and the refrigerator line on unsoftened water. Our honest read is that a squeegee, a body wash change and a quarterly descale gets most houses here to the same place for a fraction of the money.

When we tell you to stop

Etched glass is finished. Sodium leaches out of the surface over years of alkaline contact and leaves microscopic pitting that scatters light, and no cleaner reaches inside pitting. What fixes it is a cerium oxide polish at a glass shop, or new panels. We say that on the first visit instead of billing four hours against something that physically cannot work. If you are replacing the glass anyway, pay for the factory coating; it costs about what one deep clean costs and it buys years.

If the buildup is still sitting on top of the surface, it comes off, and it usually comes off in a single visit. After that a regular visit keeps it from returning. Tell us which way your glass went in the wet test and we can price it over the phone.
